Cisco has unveiled a prototype of a new networking chip designed to interconnect quantum computers, alongside the inauguration of a new quantum research lab in Santa Monica, California, according to a report by Reuters.

Vijay Pande, Senior Vice President of Cisco’s innovation unit Outshift, explained that the chip works by generating quantum entanglement between photons and transmitting them between two separate quantum computers. “This enables instantaneous communication regardless of distance,” he said.

Potential applications of this technology may soon emerge in areas such as precise coordination during financial transactions or detecting celestial objects. Although the chip remains at the prototype stage with no defined timeline for commercial production, Cisco views it as a foundational step toward building the quantum networks of the future.
