CVSS 9.2 RCE Exposes Core Engine; National Portal Safe As Private Sector Audits
Critical 'PHP2Shell' Flaw Threatens Web Infrastructure; Bangladesh Ramps Up Alerts
- Decade-old memory flaws in core PHP engine allow unauthenticated remote code execution
- a2i confirms 36,500 National Portal websites are non-PHP; BGD e-Gov CIRT issues alert
- Security patches released for 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36,
Exposing a massive security exposure across roughly 70 percent of the world's web applications, global cybersecurity intelligence firm Wiz Research has disclosed a critical set of vulnerabilities in the core engine of PHP, dubbed "PHP2Shell." Carrying a maximum severity CVSS score of 9.2, the flaw enables unauthenticated remote threat actors to execute arbitrary code (RCE) and trigger Heartbleed-style process-memory extraction, allowing attackers to seize control of servers, alter web content, and steal credential tokens without requiring authorization. The disclosure has triggered an urgent cybersecurity review across public and private web infrastructures in Bangladesh.
According to Wiz Research, the vulnerabilities (tracked under CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) stem from memory-safety flaws during fatal error and out-of-memory handling, persisting in PHP releases since version 5.4 over the past decade. Leveraging frontier artificial intelligence models, researchers demonstrated that the exploit script could achieve pre-authentication RCE against standard deployments of WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla, irrespective of application-layer protections. In response, the official PHP development team released emergency patched updates across versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35.
Evaluating the impact on Bangladesh's web ecosystem, technology specialist Nahid Hossain noted that PHP historically served as the cornerstone for domestic web engineering due to its low barrier to entry and seamless database connectivity. While modern digital products increasingly leverage lightweight non-PHP frameworks alongside WordPress, Joomla, and Laravel, the vast majority of Bangladesh's private enterprise websites, corporate databases, and web services remain anchored to PHP. He emphasized that exposure depends directly on active versioning, noting that server environments that promptly deployed official patches face negligible residual danger.
Addressing public sector digital assets, Aspire to Innovate (a2i) clarified that the central "National Web Portal"—which hosts approximately 36,500 government portals and agency websites—remains insulated from the threat. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior a2i official affirmed that the national portal framework does not operate on PHP architecture. Nonetheless, internal cyber response teams were placed on heightened alert upon the global disclosure, while standalone web portals managed independently by autonomous public agencies are undergoing technical audits.
Concurrently, Bangladesh's national cyber watchdog, BGD e-GOV CIRT, issued a comprehensive security advisory instructing public and private institutions to inventory all server-side PHP dependencies and verify their operational patch status.
Cybersecurity expert Tanvir Hassan Zoha stated that identifying internet-exposed, public-facing servers must be prioritized across administrative departments. He highlighted that legacy PHP 8.1 and earlier iterations have reached End of Life (EOL) and no longer receive standard vendor fixes, necessitating backported Linux distribution security patches or rapid migration to supported releases. While web application firewalls offer temporary mitigation, unpatched or non-upgradable legacy servers should be isolated from public networks to prevent automated intrusion campaigns.
Reiterating the operational urgency, Mohibbul Moktadir Tanim, Head of Cybersecurity Services at CyberStation (Brain Station 23), warned that passwordless server takeover poses severe risks to local e-commerce platforms and transaction hubs. He urged systems administrators nationwide to apply authorized vendor patches immediately, maintain isolation protocols for obsolete deployments, and carry out post-update security validation, official sources confirmed.
