Amid growing global concerns over online safety for children and teenagers, YouTube has introduced new parental control features. The Google-owned video platform announced that parents can now limit or completely disable YouTube Shorts for their children. The development was reported by TechCrunch.

Under the new system, parents will be able to set a daily time limit for Shorts viewing on linked child accounts using a built-in timer. The initiative aims to reduce excessive screen time spent on short-form videos, similar to content found on TikTok or Instagram Reels. Parents will also have the option to temporarily or permanently turn off Shorts, for instance, to allow children to watch only educational videos during study hours.

In addition, parents can enable “bedtime” and “take a break” reminders, encouraging users to stop watching videos after a certain period. These reminder features will also be available to adult users.

YouTube further stated that it will soon simplify the account-switching process within the app, making it easier for parents and children to move between their respective accounts. The new features expand YouTube’s existing supervised experience for teens, similar to parental monitoring tools already in place on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.
