Pang Departs Apple for Meta AI Unit
Ruoming Pang, Apple’s AI model chief, is reportedly leaving the company to join Meta, according to Bloomberg. Pang is being appointed to lead CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s newly established AI Superintelligence unit. The news was confirmed by TechCrunch.
At Apple, Pang headed the internal team responsible for developing foundational models powering Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI features. However, Apple’s AI models have been considered comparatively weak, especially when measured against competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. Reports suggest Apple is even contemplating integrating third-party AI models, such as OpenAI’s, into Siri.
Bloomberg notes that Pang’s resignation may signal a broader exodus from Apple’s troubled AI division.
By joining Meta, Pang is expected to leverage his expertise in designing small, efficient, on-device AI models. His recruitment follows Meta’s recent talent acquisitions from leading institutions like Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence, as Zuckerberg aggressively builds out his AI ambitions.
