BNP Leader Files Defamation Case Over Alleged Fake News on Social Media

Shahjahan Chowdhury, President of the Cox’s Bazar District BNP and former Member of Parliament, has filed a case with the Chattogram Cyber Tribunal against five individuals for allegedly spreading false and defamatory information on social media.

The case was filed on Wednesday, June 2, under Section 25 of the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025. Advocate Shomi Uddin, representing the plaintiff, confirmed that the court has accepted the complaint and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to carry out a detailed investigation.

The accused are identified as Mehedi Hasan Palash of the online portal ‘Digital Agrajatra’, its correspondents Khan Moin Uddin and Fahim Hasan Sadik, and residents of Teknaf’s Sabrang Union, Sultan Ahmad and Iman Hossain.

According to Advocate Shomi Uddin, “The accused had demanded extortion from my client. After failing to do so, they published a fabricated and malicious post on June 4 on the Facebook page of Digital Agrayatra.” The post alleged that “following the government’s downfall on August 5, Shahjahan Chowdhury rehabilitated fascist Awami League leaders and earned hundreds of crores of taka.”

He further stated, “The report included false interviews attributed to Sultan Ahmad and Iman Hossain, who falsely claimed association with my client. In reality, my client has no personal or political ties with any of them.”

Terming the report politically motivated and defamatory, the plaintiff's legal team asserted that it was intended to tarnish Shahjahan Chowdhury’s reputation. The tribunal has taken cognizance of the complaint and instructed the PBI to submit an investigation report without delay.
