VAT Deadline Deferred: NBR Extends Return Filing Date up to 19 June

In light of the upcoming extended public holidays for Eid-ul-Adha, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting Value Added Tax (VAT) returns online. As per the new directive, businesses may now file their VAT returns until June 19. The NBR issued an official notification in this regard on Thursday, May 29.

Traditionally, VAT-registered entities are required to submit their monthly return—detailing purchases and sales—by the 15th of each month. However, due to a 10-day government holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, the NBR has granted a four-day extension for the submission of returns.

According to NBR data, there are currently around 508,000 VAT-registered businesses in Bangladesh. Of these, approximately 400,000 submit returns each month. Notably, over 300,000 of these entities file their returns online, reflecting significant progress in the digital transformation of the tax system.

An NBR source stated that the extension aims to facilitate businesses and ensure timely return submissions. “We hope the extended deadline will increase the overall VAT return submission rate and help make the revenue collection process more efficient,” the source added.

The NBR has urged businesses to make use of the extended timeframe and file their VAT returns within the stipulated period to avoid penalties or complications.
