Telecom giant targets broader technology and AI services
Akash Ambani Steps Up as Jio Goes Public
- Jio Platforms’ $3.2 billion IPO attracted more than $77 billion in bids
- Akash Ambani is steering the company’s shift towards digital services and AI
- Meta and Google remain among Jio’s major long-term investors
Akash Ambani, the eldest son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is emerging as a central figure in the future of Reliance’s telecommunications and digital businesses as Jio Platforms enters the public markets. By Friday, October 23, bids for the company’s $3.2 billion initial public offering had exceeded $77 billion, making it India’s most subscribed stock offering. The scale of investor demand has also put the spotlight on Akash’s growing leadership role and Jio’s ambition to evolve from a telecom operator into a broader technology platform. Reuters reported on Akash’s rise and the IPO’s record demand in a separate report.
A more visible successor
Akash Ambani, who turned 35 on October 23, is managing director of Jio Platforms and has chaired its telecoms subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, since 2022. His growing responsibilities have widely been viewed as part of Mukesh Ambani’s succession planning.
At a Jio Platforms IPO event, Akash led the presentation on the company’s business, its 533 million customers and its profit margins. His twin sister, Isha Ambani, also appeared at the event, while their father was absent.
“I’m here as a representative of the entire company,” Akash said.
Executives who have worked with him described him as approachable and closely involved with technology. According to one executive cited by Reuters, Akash contributes to major strategic decisions without interfering unnecessarily in day-to-day operations. He also handles relationships with some of the company’s most prominent investors.
“He is the one who makes the calls to Mark Zuckerberg,” the executive said.
Meta owns nearly 10% of Jio, making it one of the company’s largest shareholders. In 2020, Meta, Google and other global investors invested 1.52 trillion rupees in Jio, valued at approximately $20.5 billion at the time.
The Reuters source said Mukesh and Akash manage investor relationships separately. Mukesh is closer to several sovereign wealth funds, while Akash serves as Reliance’s principal link to Silicon Valley. Reliance and Meta did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
From telecom operator to technology platform
Jio entered India’s telecom market in 2016 with free voice calls and data offers that disrupted established operators. With more than 500 million mobile users, it now ranks second only to China Mobile in subscriber numbers within a single country.
Yet telecommunications remains the core of its business. According to Reuters, Jio Platforms generates nearly 90% of its $15.45 billion annual revenue and around 94% of its profit from telecoms.
Akash and the company are seeking to broaden that profile. Their strategy encompasses connectivity, 4G and 5G networks, artificial intelligence, applications, digital services and connected home devices.
The first line of Jio’s company overview in its IPO prospectus describes it as a technology platform. Asked about competition with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Akash recently told Business Standard that “Jio is not just a telco.” His stated vision is to build a digital services business on top of connectivity.
AI services in 12 Indian languages
One part of Jio’s planned expansion involves AI-powered call summaries and transcription for customers in 12 Indian languages.
At the IPO event, Akash said, “We’re the only play in town that can do that.”
He also said, “What we have is an innate understanding of our Jio customers.”
The plans suggest that Jio wants to monetise its extensive customer base through AI and other digital services rather than rely primarily on mobile connectivity. The commercial impact, however, will depend on customer adoption, pricing and competition from other technology and telecom companies.
A record-breaking Indian IPO
By Friday, October 23, bids for Jio Platforms’ IPO had exceeded $77 billion, more than 22 times the shares offered. The public offering was fully subscribed within two hours of opening on Wednesday.
The issue values Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion. More than 13.8 million applications were submitted, according to Reuters, setting a record for an Indian IPO.
At Friday’s close, institutional investors had subscribed to 70.55 times the shares allocated to their category. Retail investors subscribed to 2.7 times their allocation, while employee demand reached 2.93 times and existing Reliance shareholders’ demand reached 7.6 times their respective allocations.
Anchor investors, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BlackRock and Fidelity, placed $25.6 billion in bids for shares worth $854 million reserved for that group.
The IPO marks Mukesh Ambani’s first major public offering in two decades. Its strong demand comes as investors are scrutinising valuations of AI-linked companies and assessing whether large technology businesses can translate customer reach into sustainable revenue growth.
Carrying forward the family legacy
Akash’s grandfather, Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani, cultivated a large retail shareholder base through mass gatherings in Mumbai during the 1980s. The broad participation in Jio’s IPO echoes that shareholder-focused tradition.
Reuters reported that Reliance Industries’ shares have delivered a total return of around 900% since 2006, compared with 685% for India’s Nifty index. The conglomerate’s market capitalisation stands at approximately $172 billion.
Akash holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University in the United States. He also plays a key role in managing an Indian Premier League cricket franchise. He married in 2019 and has two children.
Jio’s IPO is therefore more than a major capital-market event. It is also a test of Akash’s leadership as Reliance prepares for its next phase. The company’s large customer base, long-standing investors such as Meta and Google, and planned AI services provide opportunities for expansion. Whether its transformation into a broader technology platform delivers sustained revenue and profit growth will be central to the company’s future performance.
