Three trekkers got into serious trouble after relying on an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to plan their trip to California’s famous Mount Shasta. They were later rescued by a local search-and-rescue team.

According to a report by the US-based news outlet Chicago Tribune, the three young adventurers planned their mountain expedition based on advice from Google Gemini, which ultimately put their lives at risk.

Confusion During the Hike and a Night of Suffering

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, the three young men began climbing the mountain at around 3:00 am. Under normal guidelines, trekkers are advised to turn back if they have not reached the summit by noon. However, the group faced various complications and did not reach the summit until around 7:00 pm. They then attempted to descend the mountain in darkness, lost their way, and were unable to find the route back down. With no other option, they called the sheriff’s office for assistance and asked for directions.

Before the rescue team could reach them, they had to spend the entire night in the mountainous Mud Creek Canyon. The following morning, Forest Service rangers and local volunteers conducted a joint rescue operation and brought them to safety.

AI’s Mistake and the Warning

Although Gemini cannot be held solely responsible for the incident, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the chatbot had advised the group to carry far less food and water than they actually needed. As a result, when the planned eight-hour expedition turned into a prolonged ordeal, their condition became critical due to a lack of food and water.

Following the incident, authorities urged anyone planning an expedition into mountainous or remote areas to contact the local Forest Service or ranger station beforehand. The sheriff’s office also issued a strong warning against blindly relying solely on artificial intelligence or AI for sensitive plans such as travel and outdoor expeditions.
