85% Ransomware Attacks in Education Identity-Based

Cybersecurity firm Sophos released its annual 'State of Ransomware in Education 2026' report, revealing that 85 percent of ransomware attacks targeting educational institutions were identity-based. Attackers primarily leveraged compromised credentials, malicious emails, phishing, and brute-force attacks to breach enterprise networks. Sophos Bangladesh shared these findings on Sunday, compiled from a study of 226 IT and cybersecurity leaders across 17 countries conducted between January and March 2026.

Malicious emails served as the primary attack vector, causing 31 percent of breaches in K-12 schools and 29 percent in higher education institutions. Additionally, 77 percent of higher education and 71 percent of K-12 organizations confirmed that their most severe identity compromises involved ransomware payloads. System recovery proved lengthy, with 26 percent taking one to three months to restore operations. Financial damages were significant, with an average recovery cost of $2.26 million and median ransom demands reaching $775,200.

Sophos Chief Information Security Officer Ross McKerchar noted that educational institutions hold vast sensitive data while operating on limited defensive budgets. He emphasized that AI integration makes identity-focused exploits faster and more complex, mandating real-time detection systems. Despite persistent skill shortages, data encryption rates improved significantly from 29 percent in 2025 to 61 percent in 2026.

However, human infrastructure is strained, with 53 percent of higher education IT teams reporting extreme burnout and 39 percent citing mental health-related absenteeism.
