Khulna University Students Suspend Activities Over Hidden Camera Allegation
Academic and administrative activities at Khulna University (KU) have been suspended after students detained a canteen worker over allegations of secretly recording videos inside the women's restroom of Bijoy ’24 Hall. Students are demanding a fair investigation, exemplary punishment for those responsible, and stronger campus security.
According to students, at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday (July 21), several female residents discovered a suspicious mobile phone hidden inside the hall's restroom. They later detained Imam Hasan (24), the son of the hall canteen owner, who had reportedly been working at the canteen for nearly two years.
Students claim that multiple secretly recorded videos were found on the suspect's phone. They further allege that he had been filming women through gaps in the restroom ventilator over an extended period and sharing the footage in various Telegram groups. They also alleged that the suspect's wife was aware of the activities. However, these allegations have not yet been officially confirmed by the university administration or law enforcement authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and raised serious concerns over campus safety among residential students. After detaining the suspect, they informed the university administration.
Questioning the administration's handling of sexual harassment cases, students announced a protest rally at Hadi Square at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday (July 23). They alleged that no visible or effective action had been taken following the incident and claimed that previous allegations of sexual harassment had also not been properly addressed.
The students declared that all academic and administrative activities would remain suspended until a neutral investigation is conducted, those responsible receive exemplary punishment, and adequate security measures are ensured. As part of the protest, demonstrators locked the university's main gate, several side entrances, and the administrative building.
Responding to the incident, the provost of Bijoy ’24 Hall said the matter is under investigation and that it would be inappropriate to comment before the inquiry is completed. He added that the university would announce the necessary actions after receiving the investigation report.
