EU to Examine WhatsApp AI Practices

The European Commission is set to launch a new antitrust investigation into Meta Platforms over its use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in WhatsApp. According to the Financial Times, the announcement of the investigation could come soon from Brussels. Reuters reported the development.

EU officials said concerns arose earlier this year regarding the integration of “Meta AI” into WhatsApp. Since March 2025, Meta’s AI chatbot and virtual assistant have been incorporated into WhatsApp interfaces across various European countries.

Both the European Commission and Meta have declined to comment on the matter. The Financial Times noted that the upcoming probe will be conducted under conventional antitrust regulations, rather than the EU Digital Markets Act, which currently monitors cloud services by Amazon and Microsoft.

Italy’s competition authority had already launched a separate investigation into Meta in July, alleging that the integration of AI tools in WhatsApp amounted to abuse of market dominance. In November, that inquiry was expanded to examine whether Meta deliberately prevented rival AI chatbots from accessing the platform.
