Metro Movement: Dhaka Metro Rail Extends Service Hours, Adds More Trips
Starting Sunday, October 19, Dhaka commuters will enjoy extended service hours on the city’s metro rail, offering greater flexibility and convenience. Additionally, from mid-November, the number of daily metro trips will be increased, reducing the waiting time between trains by at least two minutes, confirmed Jahidul Islam, Deputy Secretary of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
Jahidul Islam stated that the decision to increase the operating hours and trip frequency on the Mass Rapid Transit Line-6 (MRT Line-6) was made “considering the growing demand from passengers.”
According to the new schedule, the first train from Uttara North Station will now depart at 6:40 a.m. instead of 7:10 a.m., and the last train will leave at 9:30 p.m. instead of 9:00 p.m. From the Motijheel end, the first train will depart at 7:00 a.m. and the last one at 10:10 p.m.
On Fridays, metro services will begin half an hour earlier than before, starting at 2:30 p.m.
From mid-November, a total of 238 trips will be operated each day.
“According to the new timetable, trains will run every 4, 6, and 8 minutes during peak, off-peak, and super off-peak hours respectively,” Jahidul Islam added.
He also noted that the MRT Line-6 fleet consists of 24 train sets, each comprising six coaches. Currently, 13 sets operate on the Uttara–Motijheel route, but under the new schedule, 19 sets will run regularly.
Deputy Secretary Jahidul Islam further informed that the metro rail currently serves an average of 450,000 passengers daily. Once the new schedule takes effect, the system will be able to accommodate approximately 500,000 passengers per day.
