Metro Malfunction: Power Glitch Halts Dhaka Metro for Nearly two Hours

Train operations on the Dhaka Metro were suspended for nearly two hours due to an electrical fault on Saturday (April 26), causing significant inconvenience to passengers. The disruption began around 5:00 PM when a train at Shahbagh station suddenly came to a halt, while another train stopped at Agargaon station.

After approximately two hours of disruption, metro services resumed shortly after 6:50 PM. Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the agency responsible for operating the metro rail, confirmed the restoration of services.

Sources at various metro stations reported that the operations came to a standstill following an electrical malfunction. The issue originated from the metro’s electrical substation located in Bijoy Sarani, where power supply was disrupted around 5:05 PM, leading to the suspension of train movements across the network.

Multiple officials from MRT Line-6 indicated that the disruption was due to a power glitch. However, the exact location of the fault had not been identified at the time. Efforts were underway to trace and fix the issue.

Authorities from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited stated, “We are working to resolve the issue promptly to restore metro services. There has been a fault in the overhead catenary system that supplies electricity. Efforts are ongoing to repair it.”

Zahidul Islam, the Public Relations Officer of DMTCL, added, “Repair efforts are in progress. We are hopeful that operations will resume very soon.”

During the downtime, ticket counters at various stations remained closed due to network issues. Passengers were disembarked from the trains, resulting in considerable hardship. Many affected passengers expressed their frustrations on social media.

Joy Saha Hriday wrote, “I have been standing at Kazipara Station for half an hour; the metro service is suspended. No one can tell when it will resume.”

Arif Jihan commented, “Due to a technical fault, metro operations are suspended. The northbound metro from Uttara has been stranded at Agargaon for 15 minutes. It’s unbearable inside due to the heat.”
