JUST Celebrates Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day

On the occasion of the Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) held various programs at its central Shaheed Minar. The observances began at midnight on February 21, 2025, with the laying of floral tributes, the collective singing of the national anthem, and prayers for the souls of the language martyrs.
The official program started at 11:30 PM on Thursday, with a minute of silence in remembrance of the martyrs at the central Shaheed Minar of the university. Following this, the national anthem was sung in unison. At the first hour of February 21, JUST's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, laid a floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar on behalf of the university.
Subsequently, the university's Treasurer, Deans, various departments, offices, residential halls, and different clubs and organizations of the university paid their tributes to the language martyrs by offering flowers at the Shaheed Minar.
On Friday, at sunrise, under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, the national flag was lowered to half-mast on the university campus. Following this, at 7:00 AM, a morning procession, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, set out from the main gate of the university, passing along the main road, and concluded at the central Shaheed Minar. The procession was attended by faculty members, students, staff, and employees of JUST, along with teachers and students from the university's school and college. Afterward, they paid their respects by offering flowers at the Shaheed Minar.
At 10:00 AM, a discussion session titled “The 1952 Language Movement and July Revolution 24 - Similarities and Contemporary Relevance” was held at the central gallery of the university. In his special address, Professor Dr. Hosne Al Mamun, Treasurer of JUST, said, “The spirit of February 21, 1952, continued into the July Revolution-24. It is everyone’s moral responsibility to uphold the spirit of this revolution.” He further stated, "Throughout our history, no autocrat has ever survived in this land. It is crucial to maintain the nation’s history, heritage, and revolutionary spirit to ensure real development and improve the future of its people. I believe that educational institutions, especially JUST, will lead the nation as a corruption-free and model institution."
The discussion was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Mir Mosharraf Hossain, Director of the Student Counseling and Guidance Office, and the paper titled “The 1952 Language Movement and July Revolution 24 - Similarities and Contemporary Relevance” was presented by Abdullah Al Mamun, Assistant Professor in the Department of English. The event also included speeches from Dr. Md. Amjad Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
The ceremony was attended by various deans including Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Technology, Professor Dr. Md. Munibur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Professor Dr. H.M. Zakir Hossain, Chairperson of the Department of Applied Statistics and Data Science, among others. The event was managed by Dr. Md. Sabbir Rahman, Assistant Director of the Student Counseling and Guidance Office.
Additionally, the Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day were observed with great respect at the JUST Jhenaidah campus as well. Candle lighting, a minute of silence, collective singing of the national anthem, and floral tributes were presented by faculty, staff, and students at the Veterinary Medicine Faculty Student Hall. After Jumu’ah prayers, a special prayer was held at the central mosque of the university, seeking forgiveness for the souls of the language martyrs, led by Maulana Md. Akramul Islam, Senior Imam of the central mosque.
