National Citizens Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmood Sajib Bhuiyan has strongly condemned the alleged attack and harassment of Bangladeshi actor Azmeri Haque Badhon in Italy. He also expressed full solidarity with her. NCP’s chief organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, also said he was proud of Badhon and stood by her.

On Tuesday morning, September 8, Asif Mahmood posted his reaction on his verified Facebook page. Sarjis Alam had posted his statement late on Monday night, September 7.

Badhon travelled to Italy to attend the 83rd Venice International Film Festival with the team of The Difficult Bride, directed by Rubaiyat Hossain. She alleged that she was attacked and harassed at a park on Monday night while she was there with her brother and family members.

Badhon later said the incident was linked to her active role in the July-August 2024 student-led mass movement in Bangladesh. She alleged that some of the attackers identified themselves as members of the Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Asif Mahmood Condemns Attack

In his post, Asif Mahmood said he strongly condemned the alleged attack and physical assault on Badhon, whom he described as one of the fellow participants in the July mass uprising.

He alleged that activists of the banned Awami League, Jubo League and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League were behind the attack.

According to Asif Mahmood, the public rejected a fascist political system through the mass uprising. He said fugitive leaders and activists of the banned organisations were still involved in attacks and violence.

He described the incident as another expression of what he called the old violent character of the defeated political forces.

Asif Mahmood said Badhon had been active on the streets during the July movement. He said she had clearly expressed her position in support of people’s rights and a Bangladesh free from authoritarian rule.

He said the attack showed that the defeated forces had not moved away from politics based on revenge and intimidation.

Asif Mahmood also said violence and intimidation would not suppress the aspirations of the July movement.

He called for those responsible for attacking a Bangladeshi citizen on Italian soil to face justice under Italian law. He also urged the Bangladesh Embassy to take necessary diplomatic steps.

Expressing full solidarity with Badhon, the NCP spokesperson said their position was clear against any attack on participants of the July movement.

Sarjis Alam Backs Badhon

NCP chief organiser for the northern region Sarjis Alam said he was proud of Badhon and expressed solidarity with her.

Addressing Badhon, Sarjis wrote, “You fought for this country. You fought to free the people from authoritarian rule.”

He strongly criticised those who attacked Badhon. He described them as “cronies of killers” and people who had sold their conscience.

Sarjis said Badhon should not expect anything better from them.

He concluded his message to Badhon by saying, “We are all with you. The whole of Bangladesh is with you.”
