Registration opens for Bangladesh Math and Science Olympiad 2026
Registration has officially opened for the Bangladesh Math and Science Olympiad (BdMSO) 2026, one of the country's largest mathematics and science competitions for primary school students. The event is jointly organised by the Society for the Popularization of Science, Bangladesh (SPSB) and the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN).
The competition will serve as the national selection process for Bangladesh's team to participate in the 23rd International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO 2026), scheduled to be held in West Java, Indonesia, from October 2 to 7, 2026. IMSO is widely recognised as one of the world's most prestigious international competitions for primary-level students.
To be eligible, participants must be under 13 years of age, with a date of birth after October 1, 2013, and must currently be studying in Grade 6 or below. Organisers said students from British curriculum or equivalent English-medium schools who will be promoted to Grade 7 in August 2026 are not eligible.
The competition features two categories. The Olympiad category is open to students in Grade 6 or below, while the Quiz category is designed for students in Grade 3 or below to encourage curiosity in mathematics and science. Winners of the Quiz category, however, will not qualify for the national residential camp or the international Olympiad.
Bangladesh achieved a 100 percent medal success rate at the 22nd IMSO held in Malaysia last year, with all 12 team members winning medals, including two silver and ten bronze medals.
BdOSN and SPSB President Munir Hasan said the initiative aims to inspire young learners to enjoy mathematics and science, develop curiosity and strengthen logical thinking rather than focusing solely on rote learning.
The national round will be held simultaneously on August 8, 2026, in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Rangpur. The examination will be conducted in English, with 60 minutes allocated for each subject.
Selected participants from the national round will attend a National Camp in August, where they will receive hands-on laboratory training, problem-solving sessions and academic mentoring. A Team Selection Test (TST) will then determine the 12-member Bangladesh national team—six students in mathematics and six in science—to represent the country at IMSO 2026.
