Fake Facebook Accounts Target Information Minister
- Fake accounts impersonating the Info Minister spread online propaganda
- Ministry clarifies only one blue-badged ID is official and authentic
- Minister previously disclosed 137 fake VIP social accounts in Parliament
Multiple fake Facebook accounts and pages are actively impersonating Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon by illegally using his name, identity, and photographs. Unauthorized statements, rumor-mongering, and misleading contents are being disseminated from these malicious cyber channels, posing a severe threat to digital security and public information ethics. Expressing deep concern, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an urgent warning notice on Thursday (July 23).
The ministry's caution notice clearly informed the public and media professionals that Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon maintains only one official verified Facebook account (bearing the blue badge). Beyond this single official profile, the minister holds no connection with or authorization for any other Facebook page or account. To counter cyber fraud and disinformation, everyone has been urged not to entertain any content from these fake handles and to report such activities to appropriate authorities.
Earlier in a parliament session, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon disclosed that the government had identified 137 fake Facebook accounts, pages, and groups impersonating high-profile dignitaries, along with 16 propaganda websites, over 300 misleading Facebook profiles, and 100 accounts on X (formerly Twitter). He reaffirmed that the government is taking strict action, alongside enhancing digital security measures, to clamp down on deepfakes and Artificial Intelligence (AI) misuses on social media.
