Grameenphone has become the first mobile operator in Bangladesh to launch a service that allows users to purchase roaming packs using their mobile balance in local currency. The operator confirmed on Thursday, August 8, that it has already secured approval from Bangladesh Bank to offer the facility.

With this new offering, customers can now enjoy international roaming services without needing foreign currency. However, users must submit a declaration form that includes their valid passport, visa, and ticket (where applicable). The form must also state that roaming expenses will not exceed BDT 6,000 per trip and BDT 30,000 annually across all mobile numbers and operators. Upon fulfilling these conditions, subscribers can activate roaming packs through the MyGP app using their prepaid mobile balance.

As part of the launch, Grameenphone has introduced special 10-day travel packs for destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Incoming SMS will remain entirely free under the roaming service.

Grameenphone’s Chief Product Officer (CPO), Solaiman Alam, said, “This is a historic milestone for the telecom sector and our customers. We thank Bangladesh Bank for its empowering support in making this progressive initiative possible. Travelers can now stay connected with loved ones through their own number using affordable, world-class connectivity. We are also deeply grateful to BTRC for the necessary support in implementing this process.”

According to the company, more than 15 million Bangladeshis travel abroad each year, and the new system will spare them the hassle of queuing for foreign SIM cards.
