In this era of digital technology and instant social media communication, news spreads at an unprecedented speed. A massive stir has emerged online following intense speculation and rumors regarding the resignation of President Md. Shahabuddin.
On July 24, at Friday noon, discussions intensified following reports from Parliament Secretariat sources regarding the receipt of the President's resignation letter.
When contacted by a journalist from a leading online news outlet via WhatsApp, Md. Shahabuddin commented on the matter saying, "It is well known to all, what is the point of hearing it from me? I am sick, so it is done." When asked whether the resignation letter had been signed, he cryptically replied, "I have told you, figure it out." Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad cut short his medical trip to Thailand and returned home this morning. However, earlier in the day, Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir dismissed the news while speaking to journalists, stating, "Do not pay attention to the resignation news regarding President Md. Shahabuddin circulating in the media. It is purely a rumor."
To clarify the actual facts behind the news floating across digital platforms, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad called an urgent press conference at the Oath Room of the National Parliament. Under the constitution, if the President resigns, the Speaker assumes the role of Acting President. The press conference will formally reveal the truth behind the viral social media reports.
