Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh is working to build a modern, safe, and responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance system based on human rights, ethics, and inclusive development. The current government is reforming the country's digital policies and laws in a timely manner so that the potential of artificial intelligence can be utilized for the welfare of the people, while ensuring an effective governance system to mitigate its potential risks.
This position was highlighted on behalf of Bangladesh at the "High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance" organized during the "World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026" held in Shanghai, China. Held under the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future," the meeting discussed the effective use of artificial intelligence to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen collective security, and bolster global AI governance.
This high-level international meeting was held on Saturday, July 18, in Shanghai, China. This four-day global conference is being held from July 17 to 20, 2026. Heads of government from various countries, ministers and their delegations from over a hundred countries, heads of international organizations, industry representatives, and prominent academicians participated in the meeting to exchange views on the future of artificial intelligence.
Faqir Mahbub Anam, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and IT, delivered the keynote speech on behalf of Bangladesh. He said, "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh is advancing the formulation of an integrated and inclusive National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy. At the same time, initiatives are being implemented to strengthen personal data protection and cyber security, formulate guidelines for AI use in the public sector, ensure responsible data management, expand AI-based education, and establish decentralized AI Centres of Excellence in various regions of the country."
The Minister highlighted four fundamental priorities for global AI governance: safety, equity, adaptability, and international cooperation. He further added, "The international community must work collectively to ensure technology transfer, capacity building, data sovereignty, and fair access to technology for developing nations. Bangladesh calls for strengthening global cooperation with the goal that the future of artificial intelligence reflects human values, justice, and inclusion, rather than just technological excellence."
