The National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system will be introduced in the country from July 1 to stop illegal mobile phones. Regulatory body BTRC will show tolerance at the consumer level in the case of banning the use of illegally imported mobile phones. Shyam Sundar Sikder, chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC), told Digibangla that it would be implemented gradually. "We are going to implement NEIR from July 1," he said. Gradually it will be implemented. We will introduce the system in such a way that there is no pressure on the customer. In response to the question of how to show tolerance at the customer level in the process of stopping illegal mobile phones, BTRC Commissioner A K M Engr. Shahiduzzaman said, the customer will get time to register the used phone, no one will be disconnected suddenly.
Mobile phone is legal or illegal, what is the method to verify it?
The method of verifying the validity of the mobile phone is to go to the message option of the mobile phone and write KYD space 15 digit IMEI number and send it to 16002. A return message or text message will confirm whether it is valid or invalid. The IMEI number is on the sticker on the cover of the mobile phone. Apart from this, IMEI number can be known by dialing * # 06 #.
"Anyone can check the validity of imported handsets using the database by sending an SMS," he said. The NEIR system will work for a temporary period of 15 days and its trial run will run from July to September. If no handset is found in the BTRC database after activating the active SIM card in the mobile, BTRC will keep the IMEI of that handset in the 'white list' for seven days and give the user time to register using the legal documents of import or purchase the phone. If a user wants to sell his handset, he has to register the handset through a specific website and re-register in the database under the new username. Engr. Shahiduzzaman further said that NEIR technology will be used for correction, trial and error process in the first three months. The process will be fully implemented by resolving the issues raised by the users later. Zakaria Shahid, general secretary of BMPIA, an organization of mobile phone importers, described the implementation of the mobile phone registration process as a milestone after a long effort. He emphasized the need to create awareness about the inclusion of a large number of customers outside the database as soon as possible. "Like the implementation of the SIM registration process, we will work closely with the regulator BTRC to ensure that customers do not suffer," he said. Similarly, Mohiuddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association, called upon the BTRC to conduct publicity campaigns to make the people at the marginal level aware of the issue and also to make arrangements so that the customers can check and select IMEI from the outlets of the respective companies. He said BTRC has to give customers time. And BTRC needs to increase public awareness. Similarly, I am drawing attention to the issue of registration in the outlets of branded companies like biometric systems.
