Gemini Adds Floating Bubble for Easier Android Multitasking
Google has added a new dimension to the use of its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Gemini for Android users. From now on, users will be able to have Gemini search for information or perform tasks in the background while carrying out other activities on their smartphones. The new feature allows Gemini’s full-screen overlay to be minimized into a small “floating bubble” or floating icon, making multitasking much easier.
How the Floating Bubble Works
To activate the feature, users need to press and hold the phone’s power button or say “Hey Google” to launch Gemini. A new “Minimize” button can be found directly above the box where users type their messages or questions in Gemini. After typing a message or giving a voice command, tapping the Minimize option will transform the full-screen Gemini interface into a small black floating bubble.
The Gemini logo will appear inside the bubble. At the same time, a brief message will appear on the screen indicating that Gemini will remain active while the user multitasks. Tapping the bubble again will bring the previous conversation back to full-screen view. The bubble can also be moved in any direction or dragged away to close it.
Ask Questions in the Background While Doing Other Tasks
The new feature means users no longer have to keep Gemini open on the screen while waiting for an answer. For example, if a user needs some information while messaging someone, they can type the question into Gemini and minimize it. While the AI searches for the answer in the background, the user can continue chatting with a friend without interruption. Once the task is complete, tapping the floating bubble will bring the requested answer back onto the screen.
Currently, the floating bubble can be positioned in six specific locations on the phone’s screen. However, during the initial rollout, a minor technical issue causes the bubble to automatically move to the bottom-right corner of the screen when the Minimize button is tapped. Google is working to quickly fix the minor issue and make the feature available to all Android users.
