OpenAI Deepens Chip Partnership with Samsung
OpenAI, the developer of artificial intelligence-based chatbot ChatGPT, is stepping up collaboration with South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics on the development of its own chips and joint research. The partnership between the two companies is also expanding beyond semiconductor manufacturing to include the expansion of enterprise AI services.
At a press conference held in Seoul, OpenAI Korea General Manager Harrison Kim said joint efforts with Samsung Electronics in developing and researching next-generation chips have made significant progress.
Currently, employees working in Samsung’s research and development, marketing and sales divisions worldwide are making extensive use of ChatGPT in their day-to-day office work.
Earlier, in June, OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, “Jalapeno,” with the support of Broadcom. The chip is primarily designed for AI data processing. At the time, the company said Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer TSMC would be responsible for producing the chip.
Meanwhile, Samsung and SK Hynix signed letters of intent last year to supply the memory chips required for OpenAI’s “Stargate” data center project.
According to OpenAI, demand for high-performance memory chips is steadily increasing as the need for fast and complex computing in AI technology grows. As a result, bilateral cooperation with South Korean chip manufacturers is now considered a major priority for OpenAI’s local office.
As of August, the number of enterprise “ChatGPT Enterprise” users at various South Korean companies had increased nearly 28-fold year-on-year. Outside the United States, South Korea is currently ChatGPT’s largest paid customer market.
OpenAI expects the commercial transformation of this technology to accelerate further, driven by its recently unveiled state-of-the-art “GPT-6 Astra” model.
