As smartphones become an integral part of everyday life, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on display technologies designed to reduce eye strain and improve long-term viewing comfort.

People now spend a significant portion of their day using smartphones for office work, online learning, social media, video streaming and entertainment while travelling. Technology experts say prolonged screen exposure has increased concerns over eye fatigue, discomfort and digital strain.

According to industry specialists, one of the major contributors to eye strain is subtle display flickering. Although generally imperceptible to the naked eye, flickering can contribute to eye fatigue, headaches and discomfort, particularly when smartphones are used for extended periods at low brightness or in dark environments.

To address this issue, smartphone manufacturers are increasingly adopting high-frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Dimming technology. The technology helps minimise display flickering while adjusting screen brightness, making prolonged smartphone use more comfortable.

Several recently launched smartphones feature this technology. Among them, the Infinix Note 60 Pro incorporates a 2304Hz PWM Dimming system. According to the manufacturer, the feature reduces subtle display flickering, improving visual comfort during extended reading, video streaming and nighttime smartphone use.

The device also includes a Motion Sickness Relief software feature. The company claims it helps stabilise on-screen content during travel, potentially reducing discomfort or dizziness experienced by some users while using smartphones in moving vehicles.

Beyond Infinix, manufacturers including Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and Tecno are also integrating high-frequency PWM Dimming into their latest AMOLED smartphone displays.

Technology analysts say the smartphone industry is increasingly prioritising user wellness alongside traditional hardware improvements such as processors, cameras and display brightness. As smartphones become even more central to daily life, eye comfort and long-term usability are emerging as important factors in display innovation.

Experts, however, stress that advanced display technologies alone are not sufficient. They recommend taking regular breaks from screens, ensuring adequate ambient lighting while using smartphones and adjusting display brightness appropriately to maintain healthy vision.
