AI, Social Media Fuel Global Misinformation Challenge: Information Minister
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media platforms has created a new global challenge through the spread of misinformation and disinformation. While technology continues to play a vital role in advancing civilization, its misuse is also generating various social and information-related crises, he noted.
The minister made the remarks on Thursday, June 4, during a courtesy meeting with Susan Ryle, the Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, at his office in the Secretariat.
During the meeting, Zahir Uddin Swapan briefed the Australian envoy on several public welfare initiatives undertaken by the current government, particularly the Family Card and Farmer Card programmes. He highlighted their economic and social significance, stating that the initiatives are contributing substantially to improving living standards and strengthening social security for citizens.
The minister also discussed the government's initiative to establish a Media Commission in Bangladesh. He expressed interest in drawing upon Australia’s experience, technological expertise, and institutional knowledge in forming the commission and sought cooperation in this regard.
According to the minister, an effective Media Commission could play a significant role in ensuring accountability, professionalism, and the credibility of information within the media sector.
In response, Susan Ryle assured Bangladesh of Australia's continued support and expressed optimism about further strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual interest during the meeting.
