APT Wireless Group Conference in Dhaka Across Four Venues in Hybrid Format
Dhaka Hosts APT Summit on 6G, 5G and Spectrum Management on Day 2
- Sessions are underway across four venues with 395 experts from more than 40 countries participating
- Global frameworks are being developed for 5G, 6G, spectrum management and satellite communications
- Spectrum-sharing strategies and the modernization of secure railway wireless communications are receiving special attention
The 37th Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Wireless Group (AWG-37) conference is underway in Dhaka, focusing on the expansion of 5G across the Asia-Pacific region, efficient spectrum management and the modernization of secure railway wireless communications. On the second day of the conference, key technical discussions were held on the commercial expansion of 5G networks, spectrum-sharing strategies and secure railway wireless technologies.
The discussions took place on Tuesday, September 8, at Hotel Radisson Blu in the capital as part of the five-day international conference organized by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Running from September 7 to 11, the conference has brought together experts from different countries working on advances in wireless communication technologies, spectrum management, emerging technologies and next-generation wireless networks in the Asia-Pacific region.
On the day, the work of various Sub-Working Groups (SWGs) and Tracking Groups (TGs) was conducted simultaneously across four scheduled sessions. The first morning session covered IMT Spectrum (SWG-IMT-SPEC), Wireless Access Systems (TG-WAS/RLAN), Intelligent Transport Systems (TG-ITS) and Spectrum Management (SWG-SM). The second session focused on IMT Technology (SWG-IMT-TECH), Satellite Spectrum (SWG-SAT), Railway Radio (TG-RR) and Frequency Sharing (SWG-SS).
In the third session held at noon, discussions were conducted on Services and Applications (SWG-SA&H), Public Protection and Disaster Relief (TG-PPDR), High Altitude Platform Systems (TG-HAPS) and Ultra-Wideband technology (DG-UWB). In the afternoon, intensive discussions resumed on IMT Technology, Wireless Power Transfer (TG-TG-WPT), WAS and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (TG-A&M).
APT Secretary-General Masanori Kondo, APT Wireless Group Chairman Daejeong Kim and BTRC Chairman Emdad Ul Bari are attending the conference. At least 395 delegates from 40 countries are participating, including 168 in person and 227 joining through online platforms. More than 120 international experts have attended the conference in Dhaka in person.
Under the hybrid arrangement, a total of 52 sessions are being held over five days. The sessions are running simultaneously at four separate venues at Hotel Radisson Blu—the Grand Ballroom, Lahari, Mallika and Madhabi.
The technical discussions at the conference are evaluating issues related to 6G, the Internet of Things (IoT), Wi-Fi technology, frequency reallocation and the roadmap for future mobile communications. Technical debates and exchanges of views on various issues are progressing under the guidance of experienced chairs nominated by the APT.
The commercial expansion of 5G networks received particular attention on the second day. At the same time, participants exchanged views on spectrum-sharing strategies to improve the efficiency of spectrum use in different countries, as well as safe and modern wireless communication technologies for railway transportation systems.
From September 9 to 11, technical work will continue on satellite communications, IMT-2030 standards and updates to the Asian Frequency Information System (AFIS). Over these three days, detailed regional discussions will be held on defining standards for IMT-2030/6G and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology, after which a joint draft framework will be finalized. The framework will subsequently be presented on behalf of Asia at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The initiative is expected to mark a new milestone in Bangladesh’s 5G expansion and the development of its future 6G roadmap.
The conference’s joint recommendations will be adopted at the final plenary session on September 11. Subsequently, these recommendations will be presented at the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) as part of the strategic positions and demands of the Asia-Pacific region.
