Police have recovered a powerful bomb (IED) placed inside an umbrella under the metro rail station in the capital's Motijheel area. The device was later successfully defused by the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Police confirmed that the defused object was indeed an IED (Improvised Explosive Device).
The incident took place on July 24, Friday, around 7:30 PM, when a suspicious object inside an abandoned umbrella was spotted on the road under Motijheel Metro Station, causing intense panic among pedestrians. Upon receiving the information, Motijheel Police Station personnel and the CTTC Bomb Disposal Unit quickly reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area.
Inspector (Investigation) of DMP's Motijheel Police Station, Abdus Salam, confirmed that detonators and powerful explosive materials were found inside the defused object. Following the recovery, law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and collected various evidence from the scene. Investigation is underway to determine who placed the explosives there and the real motive behind the act. No casualties were reported in the incident. Although road traffic was temporarily suspended for safety reasons after the bomb scare, MRT police confirmed that metro rail services operated completely as normal.
