Currently, the world agrees to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Everyone wants to reduce carbon emissions, especially from fuel-powered vehicles. And that’s why the electric cars have come to the market. These battery powered vehicles have already gained popularity. However, Switzerland, one of the richest countries in Europe, is walking on a different path. The country has turned its back on electric cars. Even if it sounds unbelievable, this is true!
Recently, a draft proposal has been issued by the Swiss government regarding the banning of Electric Vehicles-EV. If this is implemented, the Swiss government will set an unprecedented example as the first country in the world. Now the question that naturally arises is why they are going to take such a drastic decision. In this context, it is worth noting that, on the face of it, this step of Switzerland seems to be stubborn, but there is a deep crisis behind it.
Switzerland is heavily dependent on hydropower. In other words, majority (60%) of the country’s electricity needs are met through it. But with the onset of winter, there has been a shortfall in electricity production. Till now they were working by importing electricity from neighboring countries France and Germany to meet the shortfall. But this time the energy crisis has also hit France and Germany.
For which the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine is mainly responsible. France’s electricity production has fallen to its lowest level in 30 years. France is faced with this tragic situation due to shutdown of nuclear reactors. As a result of the Russia-Ukraine war, France has the largest energy shortage in Europe. In such a situation, there is no question of exporting electricity to other countries.
This shortage of electricity has forced the Swiss government to reduce its emphasis on the environment. That is why they are on the way to stop the movement of all electric vehicles in the country. Even in theaters, use of escalators and sports in the country, the government wants to control the use of electricity. A limited number of electric vehicles may be permitted in special cases only.
