Apple will have to pay a $ 300 million fine for using certain wireless patents. A Texas court has fined Apple. News Engadget.
According to Bloomberg and The Register, Apple has been fined for using devices such as the iPhone and iPad without a patent license for LTE cellular services. Earlier, another judge ordered $ 506 million in damages last year. However, at the time, the fine was not considered reasonable for a standard-based patent.
Optis is also suing Apple in the UK, where they expect the global royalty rate to be set at a maximum of $7 billion. Optis’s patents come mainly from other companies such as LG, Panasonic and Samsung.
Apple, however, still wants to fight the case. The technology giant claims the company has survived by suing for the use of purchased patents. Apple wants to stop Optis from accepting unreasonable payments for patents.
Although the fine is Apple’s one-day profit, Apple has taken the case seriously. But if you win this battle, Optis will have to pay regularly, which will increase Apple’s costs and increase the price of hardware.
