An initiative called ‘Safe Water, Healthy Life’ is ensuring safe water service to millions of railway passengers. Under this initiative, railway passengers are getting free drinking water at 10 important railway stations of the country. 5 thousand liters of fresh water can be supplied every hour from the plant installed at each station.
Robi Axiata Ltd., the country’s leading digital service provider, has been working in cooperation for providing clean water to railway passengers for more than a decade. Robi has set up these plants under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program with Bangladesh Railway to ensure free supply of potable water to railway passengers. Private development organization Water Aid is providing technical assistance in this initiative.
These fresh water plants have been installed at Kamlapur, Airport Railway Station, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Mohanganj in Netrokona, Feni and Cumilla railway stations.
The plants have separate facilities for using by men, women and disabled as well as reserved taps for ablution.
Purified water passing through each purification unit uses UV and membrane filters and reverse osmosis technology in some plants, which has already won the trust of passengers.
Ensuring clean water is one of the conditions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Number six of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. The government is working on this across the country.
Robi’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Saheed Alam said, Robi is working with the government to build a strong public health system with the slogan of safe water, healthy life as a development partner. This initiative is ongoing in support of achieving SDG 6 targets of Bangladesh.
The journey of the project started in 2011 through Kamlapur railway station. This is part of Robi’s decade-long commitment to build a strong public health system in the country.
