Education Minister Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel said that diploma engineers will be given the status of BSC pass (pass course). He informed that this step has been taken to promote skill education and come out of the graduate and non-graduate mentality of the society.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the IDB District and Service Association Representative Conference and extended meeting on Saturday, March 2, in the auditorium of the Institution of Diploma Engineers.
In the event, the education minister said, ‘Now that we have the new curriculum, we will get many students who will be enthusiastic about diploma education. Our academicians, Grant Commission, National University, Ministry of Education all come to an idea that, it takes three years for an intermediate student to pass B.Sc. It almost ends at the age of 21. Same is the case with diploma pass students. And with one year of work experience, the age of Diploma Engineer is 21 plus. We need to think about the socio-cultural trends that exist. So, we should think, how can we give B.Sc. pass status of to those who will work for one year after passing the diploma’.
He said, ‘Be it from government or private sector; it would be good if the proposal comes from you. I call myself a graduate with no specific expertise. Whereas, one passed with skill, got employment, but not being treated as a graduate, in terms of social status, that cannot be accepted in any way.’
Mentioning that the graduate and non-graduate mentality of the society should be removed, the education minister said, ‘Since we are not getting it through this generation, then we should give equal status. I think that equality will solve many problems. In this regard, I have proposed changes to the Bangladesh National Qualification Framework. Then many students will also come to private polytechnics. Then there won’t be this mentality that – I am a below graduate.’
