The 18th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO 2021) kicked off in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with 900 students, team leaders and observers from 70 countries including Bangladesh. This year’s hybrid method Olympiad started from Tuesday with the objective test episode.
The hybrid system Olympiad means, each participating country of IJSO will participate in the Olympiad from their respective countries. But the host country, the UAE, will control everything online, including tests, assessments and results. Bangladesh Science Popularization Society is managing everything of this Olympiad in Bangladesh. The International Olympiad for under-16 students is being organized with a one-year break due to corona pandemic. The event will be announced on December 20.
SM Abdul Fattah and Kazi Nadid Hossain, ninth grade students of Khulna Zilla School, Swadhin Roy, SSC examinee of the same school, Muhtasin Al Qafi, SSC examinee of Barisal Cadet College, Amlan De Avik of Mymensingh Zilla School and Abdur Rahman, a ninth grader of Akiz Foundation School and College are representing Bangladesh.
In addition, the main team leader of IJSO Bangladesh team is, Farsim Mannan Mohammadi, Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Assistant team leaders are Omar Farooq, a student of Dhaka University and Abidur Rahman, a student of Sir Salimullah Medical College. Gautam Pal, a student of Dhaka University is the observer and Morsheda Akhter and Rezaul Islam, students of Dhaka University are supervisor of the participating students.
The IJSO tests the ability to solve a variety of multiple-choice, theoretical and practical problems in the three disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. That is why several residential training camps were organized in Dhaka from last September to December 10 to prepare the Bangladesh team under the supervision of Bangladesh Science Popularization Association.
Besides, training and practice of practical sciences were arranged at Maksudul Alam Science Lab (Masslab).
The Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad (BDJSO) is organized every year to represent Bangladesh in the IJSO with the aim of forming a full member Bangladesh team of 6 members. It has been organized regularly in the country since 2015. This was its seventh event this year. The event started online due to Covid-19 pandemic in last July. After a long campaign, online regional episodes, national episodes and camps, 6 students from all over the country have been selected.
