Robi is owned by Axiata in Bangladesh and Celcom Axiata Berhad in Malaysia. On the other hand, Grameenphone is owned by Telenor in the country and Digicom Berhad in Malaysia.
In the latest spectrum auction in Bangladesh, Robi-Grameenphone, despite fighting themselves, is going to merge with the two mobile operators in Malaysia.
Axiata said in a statement on Thursday that Celcom Axiata Berhad and Digicom Berhad in Malaysia will merge to form Celcom DG Berhad.
According to Axiata, they have come a long way in negotiating unification. As a result of the merger, the share of the two parties in the newly formed company will be 33.1%. Axiata, through itself and Malaysian institutional investors, will hold a 51 percent stake in the company.
It is learned that if the business of Celcom and Digicom is merged, Celcom DG Berhad will get the title of the top telecommunication service provider of Malaysia with 19 million subscribers.
“It will be the largest operator in Malaysia after the merger”, said Gazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid, chairman of Axiata in a statement.
