A new type of coronavirus ‘Omicron’ has been identified in the bodies of three people at the Genome Center of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST). Two of them are Indian and one is Bangladeshi.
On Wednesday (January 12), a team of university researchers at the Genome Center in JUST identified a new type of corona through genome sequencing.
According to the JUST Genome Center, one of the two Indian nationals is a 30-year-old man. The Indian woman is 41 years old. There are no symptoms of corona in them. A male citizen of Bangladesh and his age is 25 years. The research team speculates that he may have been infected locally. For three days she had no symptoms other than a cold and sore throat.
The research team is led by the chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Associate Director of the Genome Center, Professor Dr. Md. Iqbal Kabir Zahid.
Other members are-Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering Dr. Hasan Md. Al-Imran; Shovan Lal Sarkar, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology; ASM Rubaiyatul Alam, Lecturer Shaminur Rahman, Prashanta Kumar Das, Research Assistant, Genome Center, Ali Ahsan Setu and Taukir Ahmed.
According to the research team, there are already more than 30 mutations in this new spike protein of corona. The data of the three people identified as Omicron have been submitted to the GSID database.
About identifying the new type of corona, JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain said, the Omicron is very contagious. For this, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the hygienic rules including vaccination and use of masks. He said work on identifying a new type of corona virus, Omicron, would continue at the Genome Center. Earlier, the Delta strain of the corona virus was also identified at the JUST Genome Center.
He also said that the work of identifying Omicron will continue at the Genome Center.
