Driverless cars are not a reality for long, but the world’s leading automobile companies and countries are planning for it. According to the news, the government of the country will build this expressway as a ‘dedicated and priority’ lane in the Hitachi and Ibaraki areas of northern Tokyo. If the plan goes ahead, it will be the first dedicated highway for driverless vehicles in Japan’s history.
Japanese government authorities have said that measures have been taken to reduce the shortage of drivers and reduce traffic congestion in the country. Initially it will be run as a ‘pilot project’. If the results are positive, this project will be taken up across the country.
There are five levels of driving automated or driverless vehicles according to international standards. The Japanese government is already planning to introduce such lanes on highways such as the Shin-Tomei Expressway. The inter-ministerial meeting also discussed the draft in this regard. A concrete plan in this regard may be finalized by the end of this year.
