In 2023, more than 9 thousand employees were fired from various gaming companies around the world. The worldwide video game industry has seen a spate of layoffs this year.
Last September, Epic Games laid off about 16 percent of its workforce, or 870 employees. Company CEO Tim Seeney sent an email to employees informing them of the layoffs.
In his statement, Seni said, “We have been spending more than what we are earning.” Although, I have long thought how I could handle this situation without layoffs but later it turned out that this thought of mine was unrealistic.
Then in November, French video gaming company Ubisoft laid off 124 workers.
According to a report by The Verge, French gaming company Embarrasser made headlines this year by buying multiple gaming studios, news agencies, and more. However, the investment later did not materialize and Embarrasser had to close several projects. Three studios were closed. 900 workers have been laid off in this company. Regarding the layoff, the officials of the company said that this layoff is necessary to streamline the organization.
Gaming company Hasbro has laid off 1,000 workers this year alone. Another gaming company, EA, also laid off 6 percent of its workforce, that is 780 employees.
Throughout 2023, there have also been many layoffs from gaming companies such as Bioware, Bungie, Naughty Dog, Amazon, CD Project Red, Sega, Unity, Activision Blizzard, Microsoft.
