In addition to ensuring the ‘authenticity’ of digital documents, the BGD e-Gov CIRT Team of the Bangladesh Computer Council under the ICT Department has developed its own software to prevent citizen identity fraud. The e-KYC will be initially used in the ICT department from next Monday, but after January 17, it will be used in other government ministries and departments as well. This will save the government crores of taka as well as stop the smuggling of citizens’ information abroad.
Initially, the e-KYC started verifying the identities of government grantees or allowances and verifying their digital signatures, but in a short time, it will also be involved in ensuring the authenticity of digital documents.
According to sources, the ICT department had issued a tender in August for the purchase of e-KYC services. At that time, the minimum price for each service was BDT 70 lakh to 1 crore. However, without spending this money, this time e-KYC has been created nationally in just 20 days by two ATM programmers like Suraksha App.
The government will be able to protect the personal information of the citizens as well as completely block the way of using the identity of one person and illegally benefiting the other through this e-KYC made of e-Gov CIRT. BGD e-Gov project director Tareq M. Barkatullah thinks that no one will be able to cheat the beneficiaries of the social security zone.
He said that the platform has been created from BGD e-Gov CIRT so that citizens can verify their identity online (biometrically authenticate) and submit any type of government/private service form digitally online within minutes.
With this software, it will be possible to verify the national identity of any person through sophisticated facial-matching technology based on machine learning in real-time by taking the information of the customer’s national identity card number and date of birth and a live picture. Tareq Barkat Ullah, a pioneer in enhancing the government’s capabilities in cyber security, also said that the software was developed by the software development team of BGD E-Gov CIRT through research. In the case of providing government services through this software, the identity of the service recipient can be verified continuously through e-KYC (Know Your Customer).
Although currently used officially, it will be open to all. In the meantime, the way will be opened for the companies which are providing e-KYC services through foreign companies. This will ensure the information security of the citizens.
