Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has been declared closed for an indefinite period of time. The decision was taken at the 151st emergency meeting of the CUET Academic Council on Thursday, April 25.
In a circular signed by the University Registrar (Additional Duty) Prof. Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, it is said that due to the untimely death of two talented students of the university in a tragic road accident on April 22, an academic meeting was held chaired by the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday. As per the decision of the meeting, all academic activities (including examinations) of the university at undergraduate/post-graduate level have been suspended for an indefinite period.
Male students were directed to vacate the hall by 5 pm on Thursday and female students by 9 am on Friday, April 26.
CUET students have been holding protests for various demands after the incident of the death of two students. For the fourth day since Thursday morning, the students of CUET kept protesting blocking the Chittagong-Kaptai Road. Due to this, the passengers of this road have been suffering for four days.
Tajul Islam, the bus driver of Shah Amanat Paribahan, who was involved in the accident, was arrested by the police from the city’s Kotwali police station area on Wednesday, April 24.
Earlier on Monday, April 22, at 4 pm, two CUET students while riding a motorcycle were killed by a bus in the area adjacent to Selina Quader Chowdhury College on Chattogram- Kaptai Road of Rangunia Upazila. Another student was injured.
The deceased in the accident are Shanto Saha, a 2020 batch student of CUET Civil Engineering Department and Taufiq Hossain, a 2021 batch student of the same department. Shanta Saha is the son of Kajal Saha of Narsingdi Sadar. Taufiq Hossain is the son of Mohammad Delwar Hossain of Sudharam Upazila of Noakhali District.
Zakaria Himu was injured in this incident. He is a student of 2021 batch of civil engineering department. He is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital.
