After the death of two students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) the university campus has become agitated by the movement of angry students and the students continued to protest in the campus by blocking the road in front of the university for the second day.
Students blocked the Kaptai Road in front of the main gate of CUET campus from 9 am on Tuesday by placing the trunks of trees. At this time, hundreds of students started chanting slogans on the road. Students left classes and exams as part of the second day of the program, along with street protests. Hundreds of vehicles were stuck on Kaptai Road due to the protests.
The agitators have announced the suspension of all academic activities of CUET with a written seven-point demand including quick arrest and exemplary punishment of the absconding driver and his accomplice who recklessly drove the bus and hurt the CUET students to death. The remaining six demands include setting up of modern medical centers in the campus with all facilities, provision of ambulance facilities with modern equipment, construction of four-lane highway from road head area to Kaptai, regular verification of documents and drivers’ licenses of every bus and CNG-driven auto-rickshaw, making Chhatra Kalyan Parishad accountable. Forming Anna and student delegations, providing adequate compensation to the families of the dead and injured.
Along with the movement, the students participated in a Gaibana Janaza in the university grounds at 12 noon today and a special prayer at 3 pm.
The accident took place on Monday, April 22, around 3:30 pm in the area adjacent to Kaptai Selina Quader Chowdhury College. The deceased are Shanto Saha and Taufiq Hossain. Both of them were motorcycle riders.
The deceased Shanto Saha is a 20th batch student of Civil Engineering Department (ID-2001100). He is the son of Kajal Saha of Narsingdi. Taufiq Hossain is a student of 21th batch (ID-2101006) of the same department. He is the son of Mohammad Delwar of New College Road, Sudharam, Noakhali.
Zakaria Himu was injured in this incident. He is a second-year student of CUET. He is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital.
At that time, CUET Deputy Director (Public Relations) Fazlur Rahman said that the body of Shanto Saha, who died in the accident, is in Chittagong Medical College Hospital and Taufiq’s body is in Evercare Hospital. Will be handed over to family after legal process.
Meanwhile, when the news of the death of two classmates reached the campus on Monday evening, the students immediately blocked the Chittagong-Kaptai Road in front of the campus. At that time, angry students vandalized three buses and set fire to one bus. All the four damaged buses belong to Shah Amanat Paribahan.
