Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina draws attention to the international community and rich countries so that the countries that are threatened by the adverse effects of climate change, including Bangladesh, continue to receive financial, scientific and technical support even after transitioning from LDCs.
The PM made the call at the opening ceremony of NAP Expo and Bangladesh Climate Development Partnership held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center on Monday, April 22 in the morning.
She said, we have called on the developed world to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Bangladesh formulated the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) in 2015 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And in 2021 it was updated and submitted to the UNFCCC. In this, we set targets for unconditional 6.3 percent and conditional product 0.12 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The Prime Minister gave 6-point recommendations to take internationally coordinated initiatives to increase climate adaptation capacity and reduce risk.
In the 6-point proposal, developed countries must fulfill their commitment of 100 billion dollars annually in the climate fund; she reiterated that the world would have been saved if the money was spent on combating climate change instead of spending on wars and weapons.
The Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury; United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Simon Stiel; Environment, Forest and Climate Change Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwen Lewis and others also spoke at the event.
On the occasion, Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury said that there are a total of 23 stalls in this conference, where adaptation programs of different countries are being displayed. In 34 sessions spanning 4 days, experts will discuss transformative adaptation, financial processes, adaptation activity monitoring and evaluation tools and gender responsive adaptation. 13 stalls allocated for Bangladesh will highlight climate adaptation issues.
Around 383 delegates from 104 countries have registered with UNFCCC to participate in NAP Expo-2024. Apart from this, 550 people including representatives of various ministries, departments and organizations of the country, climate experts, representatives of NGOs and volunteers joined the orientation meeting.
By attending this conference, everyone will benefit mutually by presenting different topics related to adaptation programs in different countries. NAP Expo is an international forum where various countries, organizations and other relevant stakeholders exchange experiences in NAP formulation and implementation.
