In order to protect the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, Bangladesh Mobilephone Consumers Association (BMCA), an organization working on consumer interests, has demanded the control of Tik Tok, Facebook Reels, Bigo and Likee on social media.
In a statement sent to the media on Monday, the president of the organization, Mohiuddin Ahmed, said, “We have been calling for a long time to stop obscenity on social media. Although Facebook, TikTok authorities say they don’t allow any anti-social or obscene videos to be posted, but the reality is that these mediums have now succumbed to pornography as well. In our country, in the interests of the devout Muslim society and the sanctity of Ramadan, there are instructions in Islam to abstain from all these media. As our country currently has about 18 crore active SIMs and the number of internet users is about 13 crore; Social media users number around 8 crores; Family, society, friends, Internet usage is very important for maintaining relatives and even religious institutions. So, a fasting person is obliged to use the internet. Many people use these media due to long-standing habits. And through all these practices, it is evident that many instructions of fasting and the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan are clearly being violated.
Therefore, for the sake of protecting the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, we will have a demand to the government and the control commission to contact the authorities of these social media and arrange how to control or close it for a month. As a result of this decision, the observance of the holy Ramadan of the devout Muslims will be protected a lot,” he added.
