A special seminar was held at the National Museum of Science and Technology on Thursday with university students about the damage and solutions to plastic pollution. In this, the speakers discussed the harms of plastic use, health effects and its alternative sources with rich scientific information.
Rajshahi University Information Science and Library Management Department students Mithun Sardar and Ripon Islam Sheikh and National Museum of Science and Technology Curator Masudur Rahman participated in the discussion.
While presenting the main article, Director General of National Science and Technology Museum Mohammad Munir Chowdhury said, “Plastic has now become an essential part of daily life but we are very indifferent about the consequences of its use. As a result, rivers and canals and seabed waste are being filled with plastic. Small plastic particles are spreading especially in the food chain. The incidence of cancer is increasing. The US is the world’s biggest plastic polluter, yet they are the ones who speak out against pollution.”
Advising the government to implement the three-R policy to deal with the threat of plastic pollution, he said, the price of jute bags should be reduced and the price of plastic bags should be increased. Stop using single use plastic products. Over modernity and over mechanized life should be avoided. Youth should build anti-pollution movement in university campuses, streets, markets and townships. The energy of youth must be harnessed in anti-pollution activities.”
On the occasion, 60 students of Rajshahi University were presented with science museum souvenirs and a ticketless science exhibition was organized along with a visit to the museum.
