The 4 mobile operators of the country are going to have a meeting with BTRC on Wednesday about the network and services. At the meeting, it was reported that the country’s top mobile operator Grameenphone could apply for lifting the ban on SIM sales. The meeting to be held at BTRC will be attended by Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar, Secretary Md Khalilur Rahman and BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder.
Although this is a routine meeting for Banglalink, Robi and Teletalk, but an opportunity for Grameenphone to place a request for lifting the ban on SIM sales. According to sources, a delegation led by Grameenphone CEO Yasir Ajman will present their network and service status at the meeting. At the same time, he will present a plan on how to overcome this ongoing situation and pledge to implement it.
It may be noted that, the operator was in a dilemma in this week as the capital market was affected by the bearish tendency since the ban was ordered. As a result, Grameenphone on Sunday (July 3) applied to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to lift the ban, five days after it was imposed. The letter details the development of the network system.
But Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar wants to see the development of the network in reality. While talking to Digi Bangla on Monday night, he said that they have been given time for a long time. “Now we have to fix their network and service quality. The ban will be lifted once the standard is set”, he affirmed.
Earlier on June 29, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) banned the sale of Grameenphone SIMs for an indefinite time due to its inability to provide quality services. BTRC vice-chairman Subrata Roy Maitra said at the time that the ban was imposed to improve their services.
However, Khairul Bashar, Head of Communications, Grameenphone, denied the allegations. “We are constantly modernizing our network. So, when a letter comes without any discussion on such a subject, it is actually unexpected to us” he said.
