Election Commissioner (EC) Brigadier General (Retd.) Ahsan Habib Khan has described the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) system as a symbol of transparency.
Speaking as the chief guest at an exchange of views on election code of conduct with candidates at the Meherpur Municipal Community Center at noon on Saturday, May 28, he said no one else could seal his ballot paper unless voters went to the polls and gave their fingerprints. Besides, CCTV cameras will be installed in the polling stations for the first time. The CCTV camera will be behind the presiding officer. Who is entering and leaving the polling station can also be seen on camera. These CCTV cameras will be controlled from Dhaka.
Highlighting the positive aspects of EVM system, Election Commissioner Ahsan Habib further said that no gesture or ‘revelation’ will work in the election field. The Election Commission is guaranteeing 100% transparency, fairness, free and fair elections. If there is any scratch in the election, it will be on the commission.
He called upon the Civil Administration, Police, BGB, RAB and others involved in the election to work with trust to create a level playing field for the elections.
The Joint Secretary of the Election Commission of Bangladesh Md. Nuruzzaman Talukder; Regional Election Officer Md. Eunuch Ali; Meherpur Superintendent of Police Md. Rafiul Alam spoke at the exchange of views as special guests.
Deputy Director of Local Government Mridha Md. Mojahidul Islam conducted the session while Meherpur District Election Officer Mohammad Abu Ansar delivered the welcome address at the discussion meeting. Chuadanga District Election Officer and Returning Officer for Meherpur Municipal Election Tarek Ahmed; Meherpur Sadar Upazila Election Officer Dolan Kanti Chakraborty; Gangni Upazila Election Officer Mohammad Abdul Aziz; Mujibnagar Upazila Election Officer Mehedi Hasan and others were also present in the program.
It may be noted that, General elections for Meherpur Municipality, Amjhupi Shampur, Baradi and Pirojpur Union Parishads under Sadar Upazila, will be held on June 15.
