The miscreants broke the lock of United Commercial Bank’s (UCB) ATM machine in Osmani Nagar Thana area of Sylhet with a shovel and snatched Taka 24 lakh. And the robbers got inspiration after watching Indian mega serial ‘CID’. Through watching this serial on regular basis, they learned the technique of breaking the lock of the ATM booth.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Cyber and Special Crime Division said this at a press conference on Wednesday after arresting three persons involved in the incident by conducting raids in different areas of the capital and Habiganj.
At a press conference on Tuesday (September 21) Shamim Ahmed, Nur Mohammad Sebul and Md. Abdul Halim were presented in front of the media workers after they were arrested in this connection.
It is informed that out of the BDT 24 lakh looted from the booth, BDT 10 lakh 8 thousand was seized. Apart from that, two mobile phones, a knife, a pliers and three pieces of cloth used in the robbery were seized.
At the press conference, Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, Joint Commissioner, DB Cyber and Special Crimes Department, said that on the night of September 12, the guard in charge of the ATM booth on the ground floor of Haji Yunus Ullah Market in Sherpur Natun Bazar of Osmani Nagar Police Station was beaten. Then they broke the lock of the ATM booth machine and looted 24 lakh 25 thousand 500 taka in cash. Three people were arrested in the incident following a shadow investigation.
Elaborating on the details of the robbery, he said that Shamim Ahmed, the mastermind of the robbery by breaking the ATM booth machine, used to watch Indian mega serial ‘CID’ regularly. He watched the serial and devised a strategy to break the ATM machine in the ATM booth and planned to loot money. According to the plan, the associates discussed with Nur Mohammad Sebul and Abdul Halim. They then entered the ATM booth of United Commercial Bank’s Sherpur branch on the day of the incident wearing face masks, pink clothes and caps, and shovels and other equipment. To prevent their appearance from being seen on the CCTV camera at the ATM booth, they sprayed black paint and blurred the camera lens. Before that, they beat the security guard of the ATM booth and tied his hands and face with scotch tape. Later, they broke the lock and box of the ATM booth with a shovel and fled with 24 lakh 25 thousand 500 taka.
