Owners of e-commerce Evaly and E-Orange have been jailed on fraud charges. Asked what would happen to the aggrieved customers in such a situation; Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said there was no point in sendinganybody to jail. He will end up in jail, it will not be of any use. The ministry is trying positively on the overall issue of e-commerce, whether something can be done or not.
Evaly’s assets and liabilities are being accounted for, he added. The government is considering how to repay the company’s customers.
The information was given by the Commerce Minister in response to a question from reporters at a press conference on the occasion of organizing a week-long online fair titled ‘Sourcing Bangladesh 2021-Virtual Edition’ at the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) conference room on Wednesday (September 22).
Apart from the Commerce Minister, Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, EPB Vice Chairman A. H. Ahsan and others were present in the conference.
Speaking as the chief guest, Tipu Munshi said that many customers have lost money due to e-commerce. Many are now being told that those whose establishments have been closed down could have covered up some of the losses if they had been allowed to do business. This kind of suggestion is coming. Thoughts are being given on how logical these issues are.
“We are making observations; sending in jails is not the solution,” said the Commerce Minister. We are talking to four ministries (finance, commerce, law and home). Their position is being determined, and it remains to be seen whether any improvements can be made.
In the context of Evaly, the minister said that many large groups of companies wanted to invest, but they withdrew because of these negative events.
