Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University of Bangladesh-BDU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam said, keeping our own data in our own cloud is the need of the hour. If we want to implement Smart Bangladesh then now, we need some infrastructure along with human resource development. The first thing what comes is our own cloud.
He opined so while speaking as a special guest at the Cyber Security Knowledge Sharing Session organized by Felicity IDC and Fiber@Home at Hotel Westin in the capital on Saturday (September 30, 2023). The Vice-Chancellor said, most of our private institutions are keeping their data in the cloud of foreign companies. Maybe the cloud of a foreign company is available relatively at a cheaper price. But we need to create an infrastructure where we can use our own cloud to keep our own data.
He said, the problem of keeping data in the cloud of foreign companies is that they know everything about that cloud. They may not misuse our data. But can anyone guarantee that they will not collect various information of our country by analyzing our data, or analyze our country’s policies and use them for personal use?
Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam said, from Google, YouTube to all other areas, we are handing over our data to foreigners. Data is the most valuable resource in the world today that we need to take care of. Today we have a good relationship with a country so we keep our data in that country, tomorrow when the relationship is bad then they will not use our data as a tool of war and they will try to destroy our country, who will give that guaranty?
The Vice-Chancellor also said, our devices are not our own yet. We are bringing monitoring software and other devices from abroad. We cannot be self-sufficient as long as this foreign dependence remains. So, we have to take the initiative of making our own device. We have already taken the initiative to manufacture laptops, mobile phones and other devices and have been successful in this.
He also said that we have been able to digitize many sectors through the implementation of Digital Bangladesh. Now we want to use this digital technology to serve our people as soon as possible. Our financial sectors have come a long way in digital services. This is truly our greatest achievement. You will see that ten years ago it used to take a lot of time to transact from one bank to another. Currently, with the help of technology, we are able to deliver that service to the people’s doorstep in a moment even in a remote area of Bangladesh.
Moinul Haque Siddiqui, Chairman of Fiber@Home, presided over the event while the ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak was present the chief guest. BTRC chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder, Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority Managing Director GSM Zafrullah also spoke as special guests.
