Saudi Arabia has made it mandatory to making USB Type-C charger mandatory as a charger for mobile phones and electronic devices. The new decision will be effective from January 1, 2025.
This will apply to electronic devices as well as phones. This step has been taken as part of the government’s decision to standardize charging ports. News Saudi Gazette.
The announcement was made by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization and the Communication, Space and Technology Commission to mandate a single charging port for mobile phones and electronic devices.
The decision aims to improve user experience and avoid additional costs. Besides, along with data transfer technology, it will reduce the amount of electronic waste, which is positive for the environment.
More than 2.2 million units of chargers and charging cables are used annually in Saudi Arabia for cellphones and electronic devices. As a result of this new decision, its use will decrease.
The mandatory implementation of this new decision of the government will be effective in two phases. Its first phase will start on January 1, 2025. This would include cellphones, tabs, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headphones, amplifiers, keyboards, and mouse. The second phase will begin on April 1, 2026. In this step, the use of Type-C cable in laptops will be made mandatory.
