After various dramas, Sam Altman, the founder CEO of OpenAI, which is considered the top company in the generative AI sector, is finally with more authority than before. Reuters reported that Altman returned to his company as CEO on Wednesday afternoon Bangladesh time. Open AI President Greg Brockman shared this return to X post.
After hourly updates throughout the day on Tuesday, generative AI reported a ‘consensus’ on the future after midnight in Silicon Valley. In addition to Altman’s return, the company also agreed to a partial reshuffle of the board of directors that ousted him, according to reports. Former Salesforce co-CEO Brett Taylor and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summer will join the board.
Board members Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner and the company’s third co-founder, Ilya Sutskever, were behind the decision to fire Altman. None of them, except Sutskever, are professional employees of the company. The day after the incident, 743 of the company’s 770 workers published an open letter demanding his reinstatement. There they gave Altman an ultimatum to return and simultaneously announced their decision to resign. Soon after, one of the board members, Sutskever, publicly apologized in an X-Post, as well as signed an open letter published by the staff calling for Altman’s reinstatement. “I’m looking forward to getting back to OpenAI,” he wrote in the post.
