Apple has already moved away from Intel’s CPUs to create its own ARM based processors for its computers and tablets. And this time, Microsoft is starting to work with the graphics processor manufacturer Nvidia and the processor manufacturer AMD using ARM-based CPU. As a result, Intel’s long reign in the processor market is going to be challenged.
Microsoft has signed a deal with Qualcomm to make ARM chips for Windows, Reuters reported, citing two people familiar with the development of ARM-based CPUs. However, the contract expires in 2024. Microsoft plans to partner with Nvidia and AMD to develop ARM-based CPUs at the end of the term. As a result of this move, Windows users will have several options. It will enable them to enjoy the same benefits as Apple users. Also, Intel’s higher performance will be available in ARM-based CPUs.
Jay Goldberg, Chief Executive Officer of a consulting company called D2D Advisory, said, ‘Microsoft has learned since the 1990s that they don’t want to be dependent on Intel. They don’t want to depend on just one (CPU) vendor. If ARM-based CPUs are successful, Nvidia-AMD will never let Qualcomm have a monopoly again.’
According to a report by tech news outlet ExtremeTech, Windows users will have at least three CPU options in 2025—Intel, AMD or Nvidia. Among these three, Nvidia will be preferred. Because the company is currently making ARM-based chips called ‘Grace Super Chip’ for some server and AI chips. It has been making ‘Tegra’ mobile chips for several years.
